Why Should You Use a Bottle Warmer?

best-bottle-warmer-for-formula

Some parents may argue that a bottle warmer isn’t necessary as there are other ways to heat up baby’s milk without yet another device taking up space on your countertop.

But, picture this…it’s in the middle of the night and you’re jolted awake by your baby’s cries. Would you want to grab your baby and then fumble around the kitchen trying to warm her bottle over the stove, or a slow, hot water bath?

It will be far quicker and more convenient to place the bottle in a bottle warmer and with the simple press of a button, leave the job to the trusty, compact device, thus leaving you fully available to pacify your fussing baby.

Moreover, using the right bottle warmer also ensures that milk is equally heated (no hot spots, which is common if you are using a microwave to do your heating).

Over-Heat Breast Milk

Milk should not be over-heat as that would deteriorate the valuable nutrients in the milk (especially in the case of breast milk) that is vital to baby’s health and immunity. Of course, not overheating the milk also ensures you do not accidentally burn baby during feeding.

Using a bottle warmer not only helps keep baby’s milk at a consistent temperature, it also allows you to warm up milk on the go (if you choose a portable warmer).

Last but not least, using a bottle warmer instead of heating up the bottle by letting it run over hot water helps conserve water as water (and your time) is not wasted with baby’s every feeding.

Types of Bottle Warmer

portable-baby-bottle-warmer-1

There are several types of bottle warmers in the market today; each serving its purpose; be it the conventional countertop bottle warmer, or one that is intended to be portable or for use during travel.

Countertop Bottle Warmers

Countertop bottle warmers are most commonly used, and as the name suggests, usually placed on the kitchen counter or some dresser. Some of these types of bottle warmers include a bottle cooler, which can be a useful addition when it comes to night feedings as your milk bottles would be within easy reach.

Portable Bottle Warmers

Portable bottle warmers are compact and designed to be easily moved around the house. Since it may not always be near a power source, you may need to use batteries to operate it so do keep that in mind when making a purchase.

Travel Bottle Warmers

Travel bottle warmers usually operate with batteries or can be plugged into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter. These bottle warmers are handy when you have travel plans or commute often. However, the tradeoff is that heating will generally take slightly longer than the usual countertop warmers.

Things to Consider When Buying a Bottle Warmer

Bottle warmers are available in many shapes and sizes. Not only that, the methods or technology used to warm baby’s milk is also different, for example, some use steam while others use a warm water bath.

Keeping that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what are some of the things (other than price) you would want to consider when choosing the best bottle warmer:

Compatibility

When we say compatibility, here we are referring to whether or not the bottle warmer you are considering to purchase can fit the size or shape of milk bottles that you will be using with it.

You will want to take extra precaution here if you are using larger 8 oz bottles, so as to ensure that the warmer you pick can house your milk bottle nicely.

Alternatively, you could look out for bottle warmers which specify that it has a universal warming chamber rather than bottle inserts. The benefit to that would be that you could use it also to warm up frozen breast milk in bags or bottles, as well as small jars of baby food.

Bottle Heating (Speed, Protection of Nutrients and Heating Consistency)

Usually, the primary reason parents buy a bottle warmer is to save time and be able to heat up the bottle efficiently.

Especially for babies that are still on breast milk, being able to heat up the milk consistently and at the right temperature becomes even more important as breast milk contains valuable nutrients which will be destroyed if overheated.

Most bottle warmers have several warming options, providing a speedy warm setting that will quickly heat up a cold bottle, or a “stay warm” setting that starts once the bottle has achieved its preferred temperature.

The latter is particularly useful if you have begun warming the bottle and got carried away with other tasks such as changing baby’s diaper or tending to another child, as the warmer will help maintain the temperature at the proper level (instead of allowing it to cool down again, thus requiring a reheat later).

Ease of Use

It would not be pleasant to have to fumble around trying to figure out how to use the bottle warmer as the baby is crying for milk. Hence, it is important to get a good bottle warmer that is easy to use since you will be using it frequently throughout the whole day.

Not only should the setup process be straightforward, but a good bottle warmer should also be easy enough to use so that you can quickly and consistently warm up baby’s bottle. The dials on the warmer should be easy to read, and you should be able to use it intuitively.

Ease of Cleaning

Over time, as you use the bottle warmer, some mineral deposits (or even mold) can build up. Hence it is important to keep the bottle warmer clean in order to maintain its proper function as well as not to impact baby’s health adversely.

When selecting a bottle warmer, you may want to look for a model that either has lesser parts to disassemble (and reassemble) or one where the setup is not too complicated.

Safety

A bottle warmer that has a good safety feature is one which prevents from overheating by automatically shutting off when it has reached the preferred temperature or if the water level has dropped below a certain threshold (to avoid the unit from burning up).

Besides the auto shut off feature, certain bottle warmer models also has a “keep warm” feature so that the bottle will not start cooling down, and this is especially useful when you get side-tracked with other tasks after putting down the bottle for heating.

Portability

There may come a time when you decide to take the bottle warmer with you on the road with the baby. You may want to keep that possibility in mind when choosing your bottle warmer as some models may not be portable either due to its size, or the power supply requirement.

Space Saving

The bottle warmer is essentially another appliance for which you will need to find space for in your house. Hence, you may want to look for one that is space-saving.

In some cases, parents may even end up with more than one unit, so that it is more convenient for them to warm up baby’s bottle in the middle of the night depending on where they are at in the house.

Extra Features

Most parents would appreciate a bottle warmer which gives a signal or beeps once the bottle is warmed up. Some bottle warmers come with extra features that may be a good bonus for you depending on your usage.

For example, some can be used as sterilizers for not just the bottle, but also small items such as pacifiers or teats/nipples. Such feature would be helpful in ensuring baby’s items are easily kept clean.

Another useful feature is a night light, allowing you to use the bottle warmer easily during night time feedings without having to switch on the harsh overhead lights.

Such a feature is great if you happen to be placing the bottle warmer in the bedroom or nursery where baby sleeps.

There are some models that come with a bottle cooler. This allows you to store one or 2 bottles of milk in the same room where you will be feeding the baby.

Such bottle warmer enabling you just easily to take out a chilled bottle from the cooler and plunk it into the warmer and start the heating process.

Setup, Use and Care of the Bottle Warmer

Although there are many brands and models of bottle warmers, the guidelines around their setup, usage, and care are the same for the most part.

It is vital that you use and maintain the unit carefully so that there is no safety or health hazard and to have a longer lasting unit.

Setup

The first thing you would want to do when you get your baby bottle warmer is to read the instructions or manual carefully as that would give you model-specific information on how to setup, use and care for your appliance.

Next, you will have to decide where you will be placing the bottle warmer – on the kitchen counter (which is the logical place for most), in baby’s room or your bedroom? While making that decision, you may want to consider:

  • Where will you usually be feeding your child? Will the feeding be done in the same room most of the time?
  • Do you have enough space for the bottle warmer on the counter, dresser, or wherever it is that you intend to place the bottle warmer? An overcrowd space can easily get the bottle warmer knocked down.
  • Do you have the appropriate power source that the bottle warmer needs near the counter where you intend to place it?
  • Do you intend to clean the bottle warmer every day? If so, can it be easily unplugged from its power source and be easily carried back and forth?

Use

Your bottle warmer is now set up, and you are about to give it a whirl. First, you would fill water in the warmer (there will usually be a line indicator in the unit). Then, place your bottle in the warmer and turn on the power supply and the unit’s switch/dial.

Depending on the model you selected, it may give you some alert or signal once the bottle is heated to the desired temperature and the warmer will automatically shut off or keep the bottle warm until you are ready to feed the baby.

Once you have picked up the bottle, remember to turn off the unit. It is also advisable that you give it a light swirl just to ensure there were no hot spots (do not shake the bottle hard if it contains breast milk as that changes the composition and reduces the good qualities in the milk).

Similarly, you may want to test the milk temperature on your wrist first before giving your baby the bottle.

Care

As with most appliances, keeping it well maintained and using it with care will help ensure the longevity of your bottle warmer. Here are some steps you can take to keep your bottle warmer in good, working condition:

  • Regularly wipe down the entire unit (both the interior as well as exterior) using just a damp cloth. Do not submerge the whole unit in water and do not use any harsh cleaners or bleach.
  • Avoid cleaning the unit when it is still hot or when it is still plugged in. Once the bottle warmer has cooled down after the last use, empty out the remaining water.
  • At least once a month, descale the bottle warmer to remove the mineral deposits that build up with constant use of the unit. You can do this by mixing 2 parts of white distilled vinegar to 4 parts of water and running the warmer through its usual cycle. Rinse it and then dry it out (If you let it stay damp, bacteria may build up, and the smell may turn foul).

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many different types of bottle warmers and with that, different points of consideration in making your bottle warmer selection. We have shared some common practices when it comes to setting up the bottle warmer and using and caring for your unit.

On our next post, we will be sharing some of the best bottle warmers in the market today, as well as the pros and cons of each bottle warmers and their product reviews. Stay tuned!

IN-UTERO is a cinematic rumination on what will emerge as the most provocative subject of the 21st Century – life in the womb and its lasting impact on human development, human behavior, and the state of the world.

IN-UTERO brings together for the first time convincing data that explains why some of us face challenges from the start while others thrive.

Fetal origins experts, research scientists, psychologists, doctors, and midwives – as well as examples from popular culture and mythology – collectively demonstrate how our experiences in utero shape our future.

Prepare to be surprised, intrigued, but no longer baffled by what the future holds for yourself, your loved ones, and the human race.

IN-UTERO A Groundbreaking Prenatal Documentary Film

in-utero-film-review

Through enlightening and oftentimes poignant interviews with experts and pioneers, IN-UTERO paints a complex tapestry of the human experience from conception to birth.

Tapping into cultural myths, popular movies, and technological trends, the film demonstrates how our experiences in utero preoccupy us throughout our lives.

Experts in the fast-growing field of epigenetics explain that we are not only our genes but a product of our environment as well, a proven fact that changes our perception of stress and exposures to the environment during pregnancy.

The film looks at how these environmental effects are passed down through the generations through our genes, making it scientifically plausible that a traumatic event that affected your grandma could leave a mark on your genes.

As if this weren’t eye-opening enough, the film reveals through extensive interviews with psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychoanalysts that similar theories of prenatal life have been in play as early as the 1900’s, and have gained traction ever since.

In that sense, the hard sciences are only just beginning to catch up with what others have been saying for decades.

Life In The Womb And Its Lasting Impact

in-utero-full-movie

Now, experts in all fields have begun to see the link between the state of the world and prenatal life. Open up the news any day and you’ll see a new article about the prenatal period.

In just the last few years, enormous strides have been made in understanding the biological, psychological and sociological impact of our time in the womb. Scientists at the Allen Institute for Brain Research discovered that disorders such as autism and schizophrenia begin before birth.

In Michigan, researchers have developed MRI technology that can capture incredible images of a developing fetus’s brain, allowing them to study how areas of the brain begin to link up and coordinate activity.

Meanwhile, other scientists and psychologists are finding that prolonged stress such as poverty, and traumatic events such as Ferguson and 9/11 impact a developing fetus on a genetic level.

Others have found that depressed or stressed mothers have higher levels of the hormone cortisol, which negatively affects the fetus by constricting blood flow to the placenta. The list goes on.

All of this research urges us to think about who we are and how the foundations of who we’ve become all began long before we were even born, and ultimately, how we can set our children up for better lives in the generations to come.

A Must Watch Film

It’s clear that IN-UTERO is an extremely timely and important film. Through interviews with midwives and prenatal psychologists, IN-UTERO brings into focus a new field devoted to prenatal life. Time will tell how those whose lives are “known” from the beginning will lead us into the future.

Considering the breast pads will stay in your bra throughout the day; it’s important to wear a nursing pad that can stay still in your bra. They should not slip and cause discomfort as you go about your daily work.

Not visible

A nursing pad should not be easily seen through your clothes, and a thinner breast pad is great at staying unnoticeable. However, the thinner you go, the more absorbency you have to sacrifice. Look for ones that are reasonably discrete.

Disposable Nursing Pads vs. Washable Nursing Pads – Which One Is Right For You?

best-breast-pads-for-heavy-leakers

Disposable Nursing Pads

Disposable nursing pads are usually the best breast pad to buy for always-on-the-go moms and also commonly use by many breastfeeding mothers due to it convenience.

A disposable breast pad is easily replaced, and it’s efficient in soaking up breast milk in a short period. They whisk away moisture and leave you feeling dry.

Usually, all the best nursing pads brands come with a layer of adhesive or Velcro-like material for you to hold the nursing pad steadily inside your bra. They also will usually come with a layer of waterproof backing so that you do not need to worry if the breast milk gets soaked through your bra or top.

Good stuff about a disposable nursing pads

Almost invisible - Some disposable breast pad designs are thin; hence, they are very discreet. No one will realize you wear a nursing pad unless you announce it. Nice to use if you are attending a ball and need to wear your beautiful evening gown. A thin breast pad is what you need so that people will focus on your evening dress and not your nursing pad.

Hygienic - The disposable nursing pad usually comes with an individual pack and conveniently let you carry it with you everywhere. Pack a few of them and you are ready to go out for the whole day.

Waterproof - They are highly absorbent and also have a waterproof layer to prevent your breast milk from soaking through your bra or top.

Practical - They easily replace and discarded it away. An always on-the-go mother will find disposable pads very handy companion for their leaky boobies.

Cons

Not breathable - The waterproof lining of the disposable nursing pad does not allow air to flow through. Heat and moisture trapped can lead to thrush developing.

Price – Considering a disposable nursing pad cannot absorb a lot of breast milk compared to a re-useable nursing pad which made of thicker fabric, you will likely change more often which can be quite costly.

Skin irritation – Some nursing pads that are made with plastic materials can cause skin irritation to sensitive skin. You may not be comfortable keeping a plastic based product against your skin for extended periods of time.

Not environment-friendly – A disposable breast pad contributes towards landfill pollution and adds more greenhouse gasses to the environment. A re-useable nursing pad is definitely a better choice.

Washable Nursing Pads

Washable nursing pads are re-usable like how you use a washable diaper. Some of the best nursing pad are made with highly breathable cotton or bamboo fabric. They are the softest and most comfortable against your tender skin.

A large, well-made and good quality nursing pad can last you from one baby to the next.

Good stuff about a washable nursing pads

Durable - A quality set of washable nursing pads can be used over and over again. Not only can help you do some saving but also greener to the environment too!

Comfortable - They are soft and get softer with every wash, good for tender, sore skin.

No harsh chemicals - Unlike some plastic disposable pads, these washable breast pads are chemical free.

Breathable - They allow air through, so they do help keep away soreness and prevent infections like thrush.

Cheaper in the long run - You make just a one-time investment. There are no recurring costs in washable pads.

Greener option - Since you use it many times, you are not contributing to landfill and greenhouse gasses.

Cons

Not waterproof - Some of the re-useable breast pad do not have a waterproof lining so if you leak excessive milk it may wet other clothes.

More expensive - The initial cost is a tad bit higher compared to a disposable nursing pad.

May be visible under clothes - Usually, a washable nursing pad is larger and bulky. Some of the fabric may protrude out from your bra and visible to people.

Maintenance - Your laundry day must be coordinated, so you don’t run out of breast pad to use.

Why Not Lanolin-Based Nipple Cream?

As mentioned in this post, the lanolin-based cream is effective in soothing and healing chapped skin. Many older generations mothers use lanolin cream but do you know that lanolin contains a heavy load of pesticides? Some study also suggests that lanolin-based nipple cream is not as effective as what people may perceive.

To make the lanolin cream, lanolin is first recovered from shaved sheep’s wool. The wool is soaked in chemicals to remove parasites before the lanolin is scoured out of it and at the moment there are no truly organic options out there.

Knowing that the baby will eventually ingest a portion of the nipple cream through breastfeeding, it’s this reason that let me avoid this nipple cream altogether. However, if you want to try lanolin-based nipple cream, the safer option will be the Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Cream.

According to the manufacturer website, Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Cream has been refined to remove all allergenic components. The company also claimed that Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Cream is free of additives, preservatives, and pesticides.

Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Olive Oil And Breast Milk

When nipple cream is not available, you can find relief from products in your kitchen cupboard. Using a dab of olive oil or coconut oil after each feeding can help healing and prevent infection. It’s also safe for baby to latch on while the oil is on your nipple.

Most mothers that I spoke to say that the best nipple cream made of coconut-based are from UpSpring Wellmom. Made with USDA certified organic ingredients. It does not contain lanolin, petroleum, paraben, gluten and GMOs and does not need to be removed before breastfeeding. Best of all, it’s made in the USA.

Breast milk also works wonder in healing crack nipple. Dab some breast milk whenever you are done breastfeeding or pumping and leave it air-dry before wearing back your bra or top.

Our Favorite

From all the best nipple creams, I pick the Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter as my most favorite. The Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter is lanolin free and does not need to wash off before nursing or pumping and vegan too!

This hospital grade nipple cream as according to Skin Deep Hazard Rating has 0/10 rating which means this salve is very safe for use on mother and even safe to be ingested by baby while nursing. Also, it’s organically certified by the Oregon Tilth.

Our alternative pick is the Motherlove Nipple Cream. The Motherlove Nipple Cream has almost similar features like the Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter, but the main different is that it uses beeswax as the softening agent. Thus, it’s not vegan-friendly. But still, the Motherlove Nipple Cream is an excellent companion for breastfeeding and pumping mothers.

So there you have it. I have listed the majority of the best nipple creams that currently available in the market. If you feel that I left out any of the good stuff, do let me know, and I will cover them in my next update. Let me know which one is your favorite nipple cream too!

How To Pick The Best Nipple Cream For You And Your Baby

Read the original post How To Pick The Best Nipple Cream For You And Your Baby on BabyDotDot - Baby Guide For Awesome Parents & More.

All mothers have been through it, the pain and discomfort of sore nipples after breastfeeding or pumping. According to Danielle Rigg, a certified lactation counselor and co-founder of the Best for Babes Foundation, she noted that sore nipples and pain are almost always a sign of a poor latch, and a poor latch is usually both avoidable and correctable.

While you are trying to get the breastfeeding-latching dance correctly and also the constant wet and dry around the nipple due to breastfeeding, it’s inevitable that sometimes you will have a crack and sore nipple. A sore and cracked nipple can be painful and annoying, and if not taken care of, your next feeding or pumping can alleviate the pain further and make breastfeeding a challenge.

Criteria For The Best Nipple Cream

best-nipple-cream-2016

While you work to get the correct latch, nipple cream can provide added comfort and healing. But with so many choices out there, which one do you decide is the best nipple cream for you and your baby?

Of cause, safety is the top priority here, but there are other criteria you should look into too. Look for the following points if you want to buy the best nipple cream.

Does it serve the purpose?

It should do what you expect it to, which is, to soothe and heal your sore nipple fast. Not all nipple creams are created equal. Hence, do not assume any nipple creams can get the work done well.

Cost

Decide whether you want an expensive brand or are you more of a value-for-money person. A more expensive nipple cream may mean more organic ingredients safer to mother and baby even it was ingested while breastfeeding. So give a thought to this.

Ingredients

Each nipple creams brands will claim to be the best nipple cream for mother and baby. However, many times when you look closely at the ingredients use to make the nipple cream can indicate thing otherwise.

Inevitably some of the salve is going to be ingested by your baby. If the label says things like “you have to remove it before feeding”, usually it’s a good sign to avoid that nipple cream.

Is it easy to apply?

While it’s common to assume that all nipple creams should be easy to use but there are some salve and balm can be surprisingly hard to apply. You need a smooth, non-sticky, easy-to-use cream as you will be using it in an area which is already painful and sore. You do not want to add any additional pain to your sensitive nipple already.

The smell

Make sure the salve is unscented; your baby may be sensitive to the smell and refuse to breastfeed. All those scented nipple creams are just part of the marketing gimmick, and they give no benefits in healing your sore and cracked nipples.

What kind of Nipple Cream Should You Avoid?

motherlove-nipple-cream

Sometimes our buying habit can lead us to buy a cheaper product just because we wanted to save a few bucks. While it’s a logical consumer behavior but do not make your buying decision solely on price alone.

Don’t be swayed by the cheap price salve and balm as these are often made up of chemical fillers trying to compensate for their lack of quality ingredients.

Before you buy any nipple cream over the counter, examine the ingredients and the fine print on the back of the packaging. Pay close attention to these items:

Numbing effect

Be careful of products that cause numbness. The ingredients used can interfere with the let-down reflex of milk or could numb your baby’s mouth enough to prevent her from feeding.

Steroid or similar kind is the usual culprit for creating a numb effect and hence make you think the pain has gone away but usually will come back again after a few hours.

Alcohol content

While alcohol is good at disinfecting bacteria but they are poor when coming to skin care products. Alcohol can dry out your skin even more and cause more cracks and even more pain.

Harsh chemicals

Some chemicals in the cream can cause even more irritation to an already sensitive area. Avoid salve and balm made with parabens, triethanolamine, mineral oil and petroleum.

Whenever you see such foreign ingredients present or ingredients that you can’t even pronounce in the nipple cream, it’s best to avoid it at all cost.

Remove before feeding

If the label recommends that you remove the cream before feeding your baby, then it’s probably not the best nipple cream for you. A nipple cream that needs to be removed before feeding likely means that it’s not safe to be ingested by your baby.

What You Should Know About Lanolin-Based Nipple Cream

sierra-sage-comfort-cream

You probably heard a lot about lanolin-based nipple cream from your parent or grandparent. Lanolin-based cream does wonder to a cracked and sore nipple. Lanolin is a natural, unscented cream which heals quickly without scabs and provides comfort for your painful nipple due to breastfeeding. It forms a barrier for painful nerves.

Many older generation will say lanolin-based creams are the best nipple cream to heal sore and cracked nipples. While they are right as back at their time, there is barely any safer option like the organic nipple cream available on the market like today.

While lanolin-based nipple cream is great but the safety of this type of cream is not what you might think it is. Also, there is one study suggests that lanolin-based cream does not help in healing sore nipple too. Consider these factors before going for this option:

The Use of Pesticides

Lanolin is recovered from shaved sheep’s wool. The newly shaved wool must be cleaned and treated for parasites by using pesticides. The lanolin extracted after this process may have traces of the pesticides in it still.

Though technology advancement has made this process rather safe but it’s a good idea never to take any chances especially knowing that the ream you applied to your nipple, and your baby will ingest a small portion of it.

Allergies to Wool

Lanolin is wool wax or grease. Some babies can have an allergy to wool. So if you or your child has an allergy to wool, do not use lanolin-based cream. Always check with your doctor to verify if a lanolin-based cream is safe for you and your baby.

Animal Derivative

Lanolin is sheep’s sweat that has gathered in the wool. If you have reservations about using animal products or are vegan, you may want to consider buying some other cream.

While lanolin-based nipple cream does carry its risk but the most famous lanolin varieties are produced by Lansinoh and Medela, and each is rated a low risk with only a 1/10 on Skin Deep Hazard Rating.

But due to the potential risks of lanolin, I would prefer to avoid them and look for other alternatives which are safe like those organic nipple creams.

However, if you have a high tolerance for the lanolin creams’ risk, here are the 2 most famous lanolin-based creams loved by the mother community - Lansinoh HPA Lanolin for Breastfeeding Mothers and Medela Tender Care Lanolin.

This is from the Lansinoh website regarding their Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Cream: “has been refined…to remove all allergenic components…and to bring to the lowest level possible any environmental impurities (including pesticide residues).” There is no similar info provided by Medela though.

Here is a short review video on Lansinoh HPA Lanolin cream.

Take Away

While they are ample of nipple creams for you to choose in the market nowadays but picking the best nipple cream can be a tad bit challenging especially every brand claimed to be the best.

So on your next shopping trip, always remember the criteria what make a good nipple cream as mentioned above and spend some time to read the ingredients on the packaging. You can almost get a good idea which one to buy after that. Alternatively, read this post where I have prepared a list of the best nipple creams that your money can buy.

Characteristics Of A Good Breast Pump

breast-pump-swing-maxi

So what are the characteristics of a good breast pump for twins or multiple babies? One needs to choose the breast pump that is most suitable for you especially if you are looking for the best breast pump for twins.

Suction Settings

They say that a good breastfeeding pump mimics the baby’s natural sucking ability. This is indeed true. A baby’s sucking ability may be divided into two. First is when a baby sucks fast. This allows for faster flow of milk and happens when the baby is usually very hungry or thirsty.

On the other hand, when a baby feels relaxed, he sucks slower. This slower sucking allows for greater and more constant milk flow. Hence, your breast pump for twins must be able to mimic these two methods.

Moreover, a good breast pump should also allow you - the mother - to fully control and manage the rhythm, speed, and strength of the machine’s pumping abilities.

Adapter/Batteries

Most breastfeeding pumps are connected to electric sockets for you to be able to use it. Nevertheless, there are instances wherein you need to use your breastfeeding pump in places where electrical outlets are not readily available.

This happens when you are in transit, outdoors, or if your office does not have a breastfeeding room. In times such as these, it is of utmost importance that your breastfeeding pump has batteries. In this regard, you will still be able to use the device freestyle.

Double Pumping

There are benefits to the double pumping of breast milk. First of all, it is less time consuming. Within a matter of several minutes, you will finish pumping and move on with whatever it is that you have been doing.

Secondly, faster and dual pumping of breast milk produce a hormone that further hastens the production of breast milk. In this manner, it is important that your pump is big, as smaller pumps take a longer time to pump milk.

Pump Weight

The size of your breast pump is not the only consideration whenever you buy a breast pump. Especially if you are particularly always on the go, choose a breast pump that is not heavy.

An ideal breast pump is one that is easy to carry as you go and move from one place to another. Having said this, choose a breast pump that is of good size and one that is also ideal in weight relative to your schedule and your body size.

Types of Breast Pump

tandem-breast-pump

Hospital Grade Breast Pump

The main benefit of using a hospital grade breast pump is its high level of efficiency. Using this device, which is usually made available for rental in hospitals, clinics, and other maternity centers enable breast milk pumping time to be cut to only fifteen minutes - especially when you simultaneously pump both breasts.

This breast pump weighs around eight pounds on the average and is very useful if your baby happens to find it difficult to latch on you during breastfeeding. However, one significant downside of this type of breast pump is that it is bulky and rather inconvenient to carry with you.

Also, this kind of breast pump is quite expensive. This is extremely helpful for those who are looking for the best breast pump for twins.

Midweight, Personal Use, Automatic Breast Pumps

This type of breast pump is smaller in size and is also lighter in weight, as it usually weighs seven pounds or even less. Just like the hospital grade breast pump, this type of automatic breast pump has features that enable pumping of breast milk in different rhythms and speeds.

It can also cut off the time of breast milk pumping as it possesses a high degree of efficiency as well. However, one downside of using this device is it is not very convenient especially for mothers who work and are always on the go.

Small Electric or Battery Operated Units

This type of breast milk pumping device is small and highly portable. It can easily fit inside a mother’s handbag or even a medium-sized purse for that matter.

It is perfect for those mothers who are busy at work and for those who are nursing and breastfeeding children and at the same time spend a lot of time out of the house. This type of breast pump is battery operated and is best for mothers who only need to use this occasionally.

Nevertheless, a downside of this device is that the suction capacity tends to be mediocre at times. It takes a longer period before one can fill one milk bottle. Also, the slower pace of pumping milk and a longer period of suction tends to produce breast and nipple discomfort.

Manual Breast Pumps

Manual breast pumps, as the name implies, allows you fully to control the suction and the pumping of milk. A lot of mothers like this because it is relatively one of the least expensive. This is also ideal if you only miss breastfeeding occasionally.

A lot of mothers who are either everyday homemakers or work from home use the manual breast pump if they have a prolonged period that they need to spend outdoors or if they are spending a night out with friends.

Obviously, one downside is the fact that manual breast milk pumping devices are particularly tiresome and exerts so much pressure on the hand that pumps the device.

Hands-Free Pumps

Hands-free pumps are ideal for mothers who are extremely busy and always doing something. This breastfeeding device is assembled and can be used by any mother while working, emailing, talking to someone on the phone, and doing household chores. It is extremely useful and efficient!

However, many mothers have mentioned that assembling the device is rather complicated and frustrating. Hands-free pumps also pump milk at a much slower pace than other types of breast milk pumps. This could be quite challenging, especially if you are looking for the best breast pump for twins.

If you are seeing your child fall behind from these milestones by a great deal, or if he/she has difficulty or is frustrated at being unable to explain what he wants, it’s always recommended to seek a Speech and Language Pathologist immediately. Very often a parent’s instincts are correct so if you feel your child may need speech therapy, consult a doctor asap.

5 Signs That Your Child May Need Speech Therapy

does-my-child-need-speech-therapy-quiz

My neighbor Brad’s son was a quiet two and a half-year-old and Brad and his wife sensed something wasn’t right and decided to take him to a speech and language pathologist. A few sessions with the expert and little Ned is now a chatterbox at 3 ½ yrs.

Look out for these five signs that your child may need speech therapy:

#1. Social interaction seems to be missing

See if your baby crosses these milestones:

  • From 0 to 3 months the baby responds with smiles or coo-ing.
  • 7 to 12 months babies make sounds and actions like clapping or pointing.
  • 7 to 24 months babies are able to understand and respond to your talking.

#2. Sounds, gestures, or words are significantly reduced

By the time your baby is a year old he/she should be trying to make words. At 18 months they try to join two words together. If you feel your child says very few words or is not talking at all, consult a speech pathologist and ask whether your two-year-old may need speech therapy.

#3. You are having hard time to understand what your child is saying

By the time your baby is one and a half to 24 months you should be able to understand what he/she is saying.

#4. At 24 months baby should be able to join two words together

Your baby should be able to put words together from 18 months, but if by 3-year-old he still isn’t able to say words like ‘mommy come’ or ‘papa play,’ consult a doctor if speech therapy is needed.

#5. You feel your child is struggling to make words or sounds

If your child has difficulty with easy consonants like “pa” or “ba” or “ma” at two years or if you have a three-year-old who can’t make the harder sounds of ‘G’ or ‘K’, then she may have speech difficulties.

Causes of Delayed Speech or Language

what-age-to-start-speech-therapy

There are many reasons can contribute to a baby to delayed in developing their speech and language skills. Here are some of the common mental and physical reasons for a baby slow at catching up with speech and language skill.

  • Your child may need speech therapy if there is a physical problem in the roof of the mouth or the tongue and so words and sounds are not clear.
  • Loss of hearing can cause a delay in speaking. Hearing loss may be because of an undiagnosed ear infection.
  • Your child may have a learning disability. This may be overcome if caught early.
  • Autism spectrum disorder or cerebral palsy can also cause delays in speaking and in language development.

The Difference Between Speech and Language

Speech is the vocal sounds that we make when we talk. Speech problems include stuttering and trouble pronouncing words and other sounds related issue.

By language, we mean the giving and receiving of information through talking, gestures or writing. When your child has language problems she may have trouble putting across her thoughts or in understanding what you say.

What Parents Can Do To Help Children With Speech And Language Disorder

how-to-tell-if-your-child-needs-speech-therapy

At times, you find yourself looking for signs that your child may need speech therapy. Though speech and language development is dependent on inherited genes, a good and encouraging environment can go a long way in accelerating your child’s development. Here are ways you can help your baby overcomes speech and language disorders:

  • Do lots of talking, singing, hand gestures like clapping, waving can do wonders for your baby right from infancy.
  • Reading to children is an excellent way to stimulate communication. You can start at six months with simple, colorful books with pictures and go on to books with activities for the child like petting or stroking (Pat The Bunny) to nursery rhymes. Rhyming can do wonder and helpful to a child global development. Then go on to little stories. You will often see that your kids memorize stories they love!
  • Keep talking throughout the day. Talk about what you are doing - cooking or cleaning, point out things as you travel to the grocery store and continue to point out and name things when you shop, eat out, or enjoy the outdoors. Listen to your baby try to imitate you or your words and keep encouraging him/her with smiles, enthusiasm and questions. Keep it simple.

How Can A Speech-Language Pathologist Help Your Child?

Early intervention is often the key to curing a child’s speech or language problems. So it’s alright to approach a doctor if you feel that your child is not reaching the developmental milestones as expected.

The Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) that my neighbor Brad went to diagnosed that Ned had a hearing problem. Soon little Ned was using a hearing-aid like a pro. He exceeded expectations on all other milestone marks after that!

The SLP will use standard tests and measurements to come to a conclusion. They will take into account the milestones for speech and language development for her age group.

Watch this short video on how a SLP can help your child.

Speech-Language Pathologist Examination

When your SLP trying to examine whether your child needs speech therapy, these are some of the general things the SLP will look for:

#1. Does your child have receptive language skills, that is, can he understand what people say?

#2. Is she capable of expressive language, which is, can she explain herself?

#3. They will observe whether the child can use hand gestures, head movements or pointing while expressing herself.

#4. They will observe whether your child’s speech clarity and vocal sounds are at the right stage of development for his age.

#5. They examine the physical aspects of the movement of her tongue, palate, mouth in speech and in swallowing or eating. This is called the “oral-motor status.”

If the diagnosis is that your child does have some difficulty, then you must cooperate with the SLP. Usually, the SLP will encourage you to observe and learn together how you may help your baby at home as well.

Sometimes, over anxious can lead you to think that your child may need speech therapy but to turn out that he/she is at a normal stage of development but just a little off from the general milestone. Always read up on developmental milestones so that you have a realistic idea of what to expect at what age from your kid.

The Best 13 Speech Therapy Activities For Toddlers

Use simple sounds

Use simple sounds like “da” and “ma” or “ba” and “aa” or “ooh” to babies even when they are newborn. These vowels and consonants have a great response from children. These simple speech therapy activities help your child to talk. As they grow, they listen and try to imitate you.

Speak slowly so baby can understand

Try to use simple words and friendly tones. Your toddler can understand what you are saying if you talk to her face to face. Make eye contact and speak slowly and patiently. If the child repeats the words incorrectly just gently repeat the words in the correct manner, so she understands the difference.

TV does NOT help to get children to talk

Don’t turn on the TV as soon as you get home or have it on constantly when your toddler is in the room. Contrary to what you may think the TV is not considered part of speech therapy activities. Contact with people is crucial in the language development process.

Play with your child

Playing is a good way to communicate with your child and also build motor skills and many other benefits. Allow your toddler to tell you what to do. Stay in the background and do only what you are asked to do. Playing with your child builds confidence without pressurizing your child to talk. Playing is a fun part of your speech therapy activities!

Tell your baby what you are doing

When you are feeding, bathing or changing your child, keep talking about what you are doing. If you are going out, talk about where you are going with him/her in simple language. You will be amazed at the amount of things that tiny brain can store and bring out at the most appropriate times!

Read books

Reading a book with lots of colorful pictures and words is one of the best speech therapy activities there is. Your child will love to look at a book curled up on your lap. Reading gets associated with security and love. This activity can lead your child to a life-long love of books.

Introduce colors and shapes

Show your child colors on colorful building blocks and other items and gently point out the colors and shapes and say out the name of the shape and color as you play with her. Your child learns to distinguish both colors and shapes naturally and at the same time.

Hand gestures

Use lots of hand movements like clapping, peek-a-boo, itsy bitsy spider (fingers crawling up his arm), waving when you leave and other gestures along with the appropriate words. All these hands gestures help the child to associate a word with a meaning and build their vocabulary.

Singing and rhyming

Sing children’s songs and nursery rhyme with your child. It is a vital part of your speech therapy activities. They encourage speech because of the presence of rhythm and rhyming words. It brings your child closer to you; you are both having fun and learning too!

Introduce new words

Add to words your child already says like “doll,” if he/she says doll you say “big doll,” or “pink doll.” Your baby learns other new words and is learning to associate words with each other. Point to you and say “mommy/daddy” and point to him and say his/her name.

Teach them to ask for things

When giving your child something to eat, name it, say “how about an apple? We have red apples. Does baby want an apple or a banana?” Whether it is a shirt or dress in the morning or the choice between eggs or pancakes; children learn to ask for things and make decisions. This activity also can also help in your baby neuro development.

Encourage communication

When your child says something, encourage him by making eye contact. Correct him only by repeating what he/she is saying with the correct words, so the child learns the correct way to say words.

Teach “thank you” and “please” early

Children learn from parents to be polite. Use the words please and thank you when you speak to him/her and while speaking to other family members. Your child will automatically pick up these words too. Get family members to help by cooperating. This activity will also help to groom your child to be a well-mannered adult in future.

Best Toys To Help Your Child’s Speech Development

Nothing work better than using a toy to help with your child speech development. If you ask any Speech-Language Pathologist, they would recommend that the best method is to play with your child and when come to play, toys going to be a helpful tool to help and train up your baby speech and language skills.

While there is ample of toys but not all toys are suitable. You might think that those shiny and colorful Fisher-Price piano that play out ABC music when your toddler pressed the keyboard is perfect but they are not. Electrical toys tend to limit children imagination as the child does not need to do anything while the toys were entertaining them.

The best type of toys to stimulate children speech and language development are those that let your child move around and play with it manually. So, the next trip to Toys-R-Us, look for these main points when you buy toys for speech therapy activities for toddlers:

  • High-quality and toys that can take a beating.
  • Toys that your child likes - cars, animals, dolls, painting and etc.
  • Toys that build imagination (i.e, stacking wooden block toy)
  • Try not to get battery-operated toys.
  • Toys that encourage movement activity (i.e, a ball)

Ideal Toys For Toddlers

These are the best type of toys recommended by a Speech-Language Pathologist while you are doing speech therapy activities for toddlers:

Wooden Blocks

Toddlers love to stack blocks. If you get colorful ones with letters on them you can gradually talk about the red block or the one with the letter A. You can teach words like “tall” and “up” and “on.” My friend’s daughter is just one, and she can already find the “red” block!. The Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden ABC/123 Blocks Set is the perfect toy for this.

Don’t Worry About Gender

speech-therapy-activities-for-toddlers-at-home

When buying new toys, should you purchase a doll for a boy, a car for a girl? The National Association For The Education Of Young Children (NAEYC) says that boys and girls need to play with all kinds of toys to develop all their sensory and motor skills.

While you may think that toys can have gender specific but do you know that even girls will benefit from social interactions and problem-solving activities from playing with cars? Boys also need the opportunity to play with kitchen sets and dolls as much as girls to help develop self-confidently.

So, the next trip at Toy-R-Us, do not limit the type of toys your child is picking up so long you make sure it’s suitable for their age. Just let them play with it and let their imagination run wild as toys from both gender-specific toys can help with speech therapy activities regardless.

What’s Next?

Sometimes teaching your baby to speak can be a tricky business. As all children start to pick up speech skills at a different time, so no specific milestone can be applied to any children. Thing can even be more complicated if a child is experiencing a Global Development Delay (GDD).

If the thought ever crosses your mind whether you are asking if your child needs help with a speech therapy, always seek a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to get some tests done and to determine is further help is needed. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry.

As children reach a certain milestone on slightly different time but if your child off from the suppose milestone by a great deal (6months and above) then a visit to SLP is the most recommended course. To learn more about a baby milestone, read this post for more details.

Qualities Of A Good Baby Push Walker

baby-push-walker-development

Stability

Stability is the key to a great walker. You want to keep the walker steady so that your baby does not go through any mishaps during his initial stages of walking. To keep that into perspective, you need to make sure that the base of the walker is pretty steady and heavy. The sturdy base will help in keeping the center of gravity close to the ground and does not aid in tipping the walker.

Sturdy Base

Search for walkers that have a wider width, as this also helps stability. Narrow walkers have the tendency to tip and fall which can be dangerous for your baby.

Good Wheel Design

Make sure that you get your baby a walker that has enough traction on it and helps it walk better. Wheels with less traction can hamper the walking ability of your child. Also, it’s best if the wheels can be tightened or loosened depending on the age and how accustomed the baby is to walk.

Height Does Matters

A higher base will allow a beginner to pick himself easily as compared to a base that is too close to the ground.

Non-Toxic Materials

If possible, get a walker that is made from natural materials, which is wood in most cases. Though plastic materials are not going to be harmful, natural materials are always preferable as it’s safer compared to plastic. Babies have a tendency to chew on things in the beginning stages of their development. Therefore, natural material is deemed more harmless even if accidentally chew by your baby.

These are some of the most important features that will help you purchasing the best baby push walkers for your kids.
